UPDATE: The Grande Prairie RCMP have launched an urgent appeal for public assistance following a dramatic high-speed chase that occurred on November 10, 2023. This incident, which involved an officer-involved shooting and a rolled-over vehicle, is now under investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).

At approximately 1:30 p.m., police responded to an emergency call regarding a domestic dispute. Specific details surrounding the initial call have not been disclosed, but officers soon located the suspect vehicle and attempted to pull it over. The driver, however, fled the scene, leading to a tense pursuit.

During the chase, the suspect vehicle veered off the road and rolled over. Following the crash, the driver exited the vehicle, resulting in an altercation with police. At least one officer discharged their service weapon, striking the suspect.

Authorities confirm that civilian vehicles were struck during the chaotic pursuit, which played out publicly on social media as local drivers shared updates and footage of the unfolding events.

According to RCMP officials, legislation mandates that a separate agency handle investigations involving police shootings. Consequently, ASIRT was immediately notified and dispatched to the scene.

“The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency,” stated an official. “We will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators. Events like this are difficult for everyone involved.”

ASIRT is currently reviewing all relevant evidence, including witness interviews, video footage, and photographs from the scene. Concurrently, the RCMP has initiated an internal review to gather a comprehensive account of the incident, examining aspects such as training, policy adherence, and the officer’s duty status.

In a critical move, the RCMP has requested public assistance in locating any footage from the chase. They are particularly interested in videos or photos that show a white GMC Sierra driving at high speeds between 1:45 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. on the day of the incident.

Anyone who may have noticed damage to their vehicle during this timeframe or who has relevant recordings is urged to contact the RCMP at 780-830-5701.

This ongoing investigation highlights the urgent need for community support in piecing together the events of that day. The RCMP is committed to ensuring a thorough investigation as they navigate the complexities of this serious incident.
