Grizzly Bear Attack: Two Hikers Injured Near Prince George

BREAKING: Two hikers were attacked by a grizzly bear in the McGregor Mountain area, northeast of Prince George, B.C., according to the B.C. Conservation Office Service. The incident occurred on October 12, 2023, and authorities are investigating the scene.
While specific details on the hikers’ injuries have not been released, the attack has led to the cancellation of hiking activities in the Pass Lake area, and all trails are now closed as a precaution. A photo from the scene shows both an RCMP helicopter and a civilian helicopter surveying the area, which features a light dusting of snow.
This attack comes on the heels of two previous bear incidents in B.C. Earlier, on September 29, a hunter was bitten on the ankle by a grizzly sow near Fort St. James while the bear was protecting her cub. Fortunately, the hunter was able to seek medical help afterward. On October 3, another hunter was seriously injured by a grizzly sow and her cubs near Fort Steele and was airlifted to Kelowna General Hospital for treatment.
Officials warn that late summer and early fall are peak times for bear encounters as human outdoor activity increases and bears forage for food ahead of winter. Authorities emphasize that bears can react defensively, particularly female grizzlies with cubs.
Officials advise anyone entering backcountry areas to take precautions: make noise to alert wildlife, travel in groups, securely store food, and carry bear spray. If confronted by a bear, stay calm, avoid running, and back away slowly while speaking softly. Use bear spray if the bear charges.
