Grundy County Chamber Hosts First State of the Village Address
UPDATE: The Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Coal City have just hosted the inaugural State of the Village Address on October 22, 2023, drawing over 100 attendees to the Coal City Lions Club. This historic event featured Mayor Dave Spesia, who outlined significant achievements and ambitious goals for the community.
During his address, Mayor Spesia highlighted key accomplishments from 2024 and 2025, while also looking ahead to 2026. Among the announcements were the expansion of Riverside Medical and the progress on Phase 2 of the DCEO Community Block Grant Housing Rehabilitation Program. “Our local businesses deserve our support. By remaining competitive and delivering quality, they fulfill their part. Now, residents must fulfill theirs by shopping local so these businesses can survive and thrive in Coal City,” Spesia urged.
The address also honored Dean Marketti, who received the 2025 Community Service Award for his unwavering commitment to improving the village. “Dean is deeply committed to the success of our village, generously sharing his business experience, skills, and positive attitude,” said Mayor Spesia.
In a poignant moment, the mayor announced the new Coal City Veterans banner program, designed to honor local veterans. The banners will be displayed throughout downtown, coinciding with the upcoming Veterans Day celebrations. Spesia revealed his own veteran banner, emphasizing the community’s dedication to recognizing those who have served.
The event, sponsored by Greenway Autos and D Construction, along with support from Coal City Bank – Branch of Bank of Pontiac, The Pointe at Morris, Chamlin & Associates, Sunshine Garden Center, and Cardinal Transport, fostered a spirit of camaraderie. Attendees enjoyed networking opportunities over cocktails and appetizers from The Clubhouse in Coal City.
“This year’s response has been overwhelming for a first-year event. We anticipate even greater support and excitement next year for what’s happening in Coal City,” stated Chamber President & CEO Christina Van Yperen.
As the village prepares to celebrate Veterans Day, the momentum from this event highlights Coal City’s commitment to community, progress, and local support. Stay tuned for further updates on initiatives and events as they unfold.
