Gunman Kills 3 in Random Shooting Outside Target in Austin

URGENT UPDATE: A shocking shooting spree outside a Target store in Austin, Texas, has left three people dead, including a 4-year-old girl. The gunman, identified as Ethan Nieneker, 32, randomly targeted victims, beginning with a store employee around 4 PM on August 28, 2023.
Authorities report that Nieneker shot Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, who was collecting shopping carts, before turning his weapon on Adam Chow, 65, and his granddaughter in their SUV. The child was fatally shot in the back seat. Police Chief Lisa Davis condemned the violence, stating, “Innocent lives were taken in broad daylight, in a place where people should feel safe.”
The chaos unfolded after Nieneker fled the scene, leading to a series of stolen vehicles and crashes. Officers apprehended him after he abandoned his clothes and was found naked, holding a Bible. He was subdued with a Taser and reportedly claimed, “He said that he was Jesus,” according to Sgt. Nathan Sexton.
Witnesses reported numerous 911 calls as Nieneker wreaked havoc across the city. One driver, Chris Ferran, described chasing Nieneker after witnessing the SUV crash into two vehicles. He recalled, “As soon as I saw that, I threw the phone down and I reversed.”
Nieneker is now charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of murder. His criminal history includes multiple arrests for domestic violence and assault, raising questions about his mental health and access to firearms.
The police confirmed that the weapon used in the attack was acquired through a family member. Chief Davis stated that while Nieneker had a documented history of mental health issues, there is no specific diagnosis available.
This tragic incident comes during a busy back-to-school shopping season, echoing fears following a recent stabbing attack in Michigan, which left multiple victims injured.
The community is left reeling as the investigation continues, with police urging anyone who witnessed the events to come forward. As more details emerge, the focus remains on the impact of gun violence and the safety of public spaces.
