Gunshots Heard at Edgewood Ostrich Farm Amid Culling Operation
URGENT UPDATE: Gunshots were reported at Universal Ostrich Farms in Edgewood, B.C. on Thursday evening as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) initiated a culling operation. Eyewitnesses from CBC News heard multiple shots ring out from within a hay bale enclosure where the CFIA had gathered nearly 300 to 330 ostriches after a confirmed avian flu outbreak last December.
The incident occurred just hours after the Supreme Court of Canada declined to hear an appeal aimed at halting the cull, leading to heightened tensions among the farm’s supporters. As darkness fell, those present shouted “Stop!” and “Murderers!” in protest of the CFIA’s actions. The culling process, described by the agency as “complete depopulation and disposal,” has raised significant public outcry and concern for animal welfare.
According to CFIA representatives, the decision to cull the flock was made due to the health risks posed by avian flu, which has already impacted several farms across the region. The agency’s operations included establishing a fenced-off area filled with stacked hay bales, designed to contain the ostriches during the culling procedure.
This shocking turn of events has not only drawn attention to the situation at Universal Ostrich Farms but has also sparked debates over animal rights and biosecurity measures. Animal welfare advocates are calling for immediate intervention and oversight regarding the treatment of these birds, emphasizing the emotional toll on both the animals and the farm’s community.
As the situation develops, the CFIA has confirmed its commitment to proceed with the culling despite public backlash. Officials are urging the local community to remain calm and informed as they navigate this complicated and distressing scenario.
