Habs Announce Top Five Prospects to Watch for 2026 Season
UPDATE: The Montreal Canadiens have unveiled their top five prospects to watch as they prepare for the 2026 NHL season. This announcement, made earlier today, highlights the future stars of the franchise amidst their ongoing rebuild.
Fans are buzzing with excitement over rising talents like Florian Xhekaj, Adam Engström, and Bryce Pickford, who all have shown promising performances this season. These players are not just names on a roster; they represent the Canadiens’ hope for a return to glory in the league.
Florian Xhekaj made his NHL debut on November 23, 2025, and while he played a limited five games, he has already made a significant impact. At just 21 years old, Xhekaj is known for his physical play, proving he isn’t afraid to engage with opponents. He recorded an impressive 22 goals and 12 assists in 62 AHL games last season, making him a player to watch closely as he aims for a full-time NHL position in the upcoming season.
Meanwhile, Adam Engström has also caught the attention of scouts. After a brief stint in the NHL, he showcased his skills as a mobile defenseman with a solid offensive output of five goals and 16 points in just 20 games with the Laval Rocket. As the Canadiens navigate their roster dynamics, with Mike Matheson recently signing an extension, Engström’s future could be pivotal in determining the team’s defensive strategy.
Another standout prospect, Bryce Pickford, was selected in the third round of the last draft and is quickly making a name for himself. He recently scored an astounding 12 goals in six consecutive games for the Medicine Hat Tigers, showcasing his offensive prowess as a defenseman. With the Canadiens’ depth in right-handed defensemen lacking, Pickford’s continued success could secure his place in the organization’s future plans.
Not to be overlooked, LJ Mooney is another name to watch. Drafted by the Canadiens in 2025, he is currently developing in the NCAA with an impressive four goals and 15 points in 19 games. While he may not hit the NHL stage just yet, his skill set and potential make him an exciting long-term project for the franchise.
Finally, Owen Protz, despite modest numbers this season with just 13 points in 30 games, is generating buzz due to his physical style of play. His ability to hit hard and disrupt opponents could see him rise through the ranks if the Canadiens seek to bolster their defensive lineup.
As the Canadiens gear up for the 2026 season, they also have strong prospects between the pipes, including Jacob Fowler, Yevgeni Volohkin, and Quentin Miller, who have been dominant lately. The organization is also keeping an eye on Arseni Radkov and Alexis Cournoyer, both drafted this year, who are making significant strides in their development.
With these emerging talents, the Montreal Canadiens are positioning themselves for a brighter future. Fans are eagerly anticipating how these players will develop over the coming months, potentially shaping the team’s success for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates as the 2026 season approaches!
