Halton Hills Cricket Club Offers Free Youth Sessions This Fall
URGENT UPDATE: The Halton Hills Cricket Club (HHCC) is set to host two free youth cricket sessions this fall, providing a golden opportunity for kids aged four to 17 to dive into the sport. The sessions are scheduled for October 1 at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School and October 8 at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School, both in Georgetown. They will run from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
This initiative comes as cricket is rapidly gaining traction in Halton Hills, fueled by the passion of local coach Mamunur Rashid. Rashid, who has a rich background in cricket, having played in Dhaka’s professional league, emphasizes the importance of introducing the sport to youth early on. “Cricket is in my blood,” he stated, highlighting his commitment to fostering local talent.
With just 32 participants already registered—including seven girls—the program is off to a promising start. Rashid noted the noticeable gap in cricket development in Halton Hills compared to nearby Milton, where local clubs boast over 100 registered players. “We realized we needed to build something similar here,” Rashid explained.
The HHCC’s grassroots program, supported by the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Community Development Grant, aims to create a sustainable pathway for cricket in Georgetown. Rashid believes that engaging children at a young age will help them develop skills and foster teamwork and leadership.
The Town of Halton Hills has also played a crucial role in the program’s rollout, assisting with grant applications and promoting the initiative to local families.
This is a pivotal moment for cricket in the region, as the HHCC strives to make the sport a vibrant part of Halton Hills’ sporting culture. Rashid is optimistic about the future and urges more families to get involved. “Our goal is to establish cricket here in a way that supports both the game and the personal growth of the kids who play it,” he said.
Parents interested in enrolling their children in the upcoming sessions can reach out to Rashid directly at 647-770-1691. Don’t miss this chance to be part of Halton Hills’ cricketing future!
