UPDATE: Highway 11 has just reopened following severe weather conditions that shut down the route from Cochrane to Matheson earlier today. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) issued an urgent warning on social media advising drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes due to hazardous conditions.

As of this morning, January 27, 2024, severe winter weather continues to impact travel across parts of Ontario. Special weather statements remain in effect for regions near North Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. According to Environment Canada, the Sault area could see lake effect snow accumulate between 10-15 cm throughout the day, posing risks with significantly reduced visibility.

Residents are urged to exercise caution as roadways and walkways are becoming increasingly difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. In North Bay, heavy snowfall is expected to reach up to 10 cm this morning, further complicating travel conditions with local blowing snow.

Drivers are strongly advised to check updated road conditions on Ontario 511 before heading out. The OPP continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as they become available.

For those affected by the weather, please report severe conditions to [email protected] and stay tuned for more updates as this situation develops.
