Highway 402 Reopens After Fatal Collision Claims One Life
UPDATE: Highway 402 has reopened following a tragic three-vehicle collision that occurred just after 12:30 p.m. today, resulting in the death of an 87-year-old man from Sarnia. The collision, which involved a minivan, an SUV, and a transport truck, sent four individuals to the hospital, with one succumbing to injuries shortly after the incident.
Authorities report that the SUV was traveling westbound on Highway 402 when it crossed the center median into the eastbound lanes. This led to a collision with the minivan before the SUV struck the transport truck. The deceased man was a passenger in the minivan at the time of the accident.
According to Sgt. Ed Sanchuck of the West Region OPP, “Preliminary stages are indicating that this SUV was traveling westbound in the 402, crossed over the center median into the eastbound lanes, colliding with the minivan, at which time that SUV then collided with a transport truck.”
Emergency services responded quickly, and three people in the minivan, along with the driver of the SUV, were transported to the hospital. Fortunately, the driver of the transport truck suffered no injuries.
The crash prompted the closure of all eastbound lanes between Colonel Talbot Road and Wonderland Road South, causing significant traffic disruptions. Eastbound traffic was diverted to ensure the safety of responders and to facilitate the investigation.
As of 10:00 p.m., the highway has reopened to vehicular traffic. However, police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
This incident highlights the dangers of highway travel and serves as a reminder for drivers to remain vigilant. More updates will follow as officials investigate further.
