Hit-and-Run Driver Sought After 19-Year-Old Injured in Markham
A 19-year-old woman suffered serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident in Markham, Ontario, where she was carried on the hood of the suspect’s vehicle for approximately 50 metres. The incident occurred around 15:40 on March 14, 2024, at the intersection of Denison Street and Featherstone Avenue.
York Regional Police received reports of the collision and located the victim on the roadway east of the intersection. According to police, the young woman was in the crosswalk when she was struck by a vehicle turning eastbound onto Denison from Featherstone.
Constable Lisa Moskaluk provided details to reporters, stating, “The victim had left a bus at this intersection and was making her way northbound across the intersection towards Denison. This vehicle continued with the victim on their hood for about 50 metres. They would have known that they had struck somebody as they carried her for quite some time.”
The victim is currently in critical but stable condition in hospital, suffering from injuries that police describe as “life-altering.”
Dangerous Maneuver and Ongoing Investigation
Following the collision, the driver did not stop and instead continued eastbound along Denison Street in a dangerous manner. As the vehicle approached a red light at Middlefield Avenue, it reportedly drove into oncoming traffic to avoid waiting at the light before turning northbound onto Middlefield.
The suspect vehicle is described as an electric blue, four-door Honda Civic, likely a model from 2016 to 2020. It features chrome trim, tinted passenger windows, and winter tires with steel rims. Police confirmed that the front-end and windshield of the vehicle are likely damaged from the collision.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident or the suspect vehicle to come forward. Witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision are encouraged to contact the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit at 1-866-876-5423, extension 7704. Alternatively, tips can be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at www.1800222tips.com.
The police continue their investigation into this serious incident as they seek to hold the responsible party accountable.
