Home Depot Investigates Shoplifting After Doug Ford’s Confrontation
UPDATE: Home Depot is urgently investigating a reported shoplifting incident at its store in Etobicoke, Toronto, after Ontario Premier Doug Ford claimed he confronted a thief and issued a serious threat. The incident reportedly occurred on July 19, 2023, while Ford was shopping for plants.
In a shocking revelation during an Empire Club of Canada luncheon, Ford detailed how he took matters into his own hands when he witnessed a shoplifter attempting to leave the store. “I said, ‘Buddy, I’m going to kick your ass all over the parking lot,’” Ford recounted, clearly agitated by the situation.
Home Depot confirmed they are reaching out to verify the specifics of the alleged theft. “Organized retail crime is a serious issue that continues to grow in Canada and can lead to threats of violence and vandalism,” a Home Depot spokesperson stated. They emphasized that the safety of customers and associates is their top priority and expressed their commitment to collaborating with local law enforcement.
Ford’s dramatic account unfolded as he described escaping his security detail to shop for plants. He claimed that after loading up his vehicle, he saw a man with a backpack exiting the store while the manager shouted for him to return. Despite being told by a security guard that they were not allowed to intervene, Ford decided to chase the suspect himself.
At the scene, the suspect allegedly emptied his bag, which Ford claimed contained tools including a pair of cutters and a saw blade. Ford further stated, “If I ever see him in the parking lot, he’s gonna get a beating like he’s never got before.”
Despite Ford’s strong words, Toronto Police reported no record of the incident, raising questions about the validity of the premier’s claims. The investigation by Home Depot is ongoing as they seek to confirm whether the theft actually took place.
As this story develops, it highlights not only the rise in retail theft but also the tensions surrounding public safety in Ontario. Authorities stress the importance of ensuring store security while promoting a safe environment for shoppers.
What happens next could set a precedent for how both public figures and retailers handle shoplifting incidents. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as Home Depot works alongside law enforcement to clarify the situation.
