Homemade Zamboni Transforms Quebec Backyard Rink Experience
A homemade Zamboni is taking backyard hockey to new heights in Mayo, Quebec, captivating sports enthusiasts and locals. Chris Flynn, a Canadian Football Hall of Fame quarterback, has spent over a decade perfecting his backyard rink on Long Lake, just 50 kilometers northeast of Gatineau. This project is not just about ice hockey; it’s a testament to community spirit and innovation.
Just announced, Flynn’s latest creation—a hand-built Zamboni—has gone viral, amassing over 35,000 likes on social media. “In 2010, I decided to start doing a skating rink on the lake,” Flynn explained. But maintaining smooth ice proved challenging. With the assistance of neighbor Stephane Deshaies, they transformed an old lawnmower into a fully functional Zamboni.
Deshaies emphasized that the machine mirrors a real Zamboni, stating, “What we like about it, it’s the same shape as a real Zamboni.” The duo utilized hot water, enhancing the quality of the ice, a feature that Flynn noted is crucial for optimal conditions. “We’re able to use hot water, which cures and repairs the ice better than cold water,” he said.
The homemade Zamboni rolls out during intermissions, elevating casual games into experiences reminiscent of professional arenas. “It’s everyone’s true dream. In between periods, this miniature Zamboni came and did the rink,” Flynn remarked, highlighting the joy it brings to players and spectators alike.
While the project demands significant effort, Deshaies finds immense satisfaction in its success. “It’s a lot of work to maintain the rink on the lake. But every time we’ve got people using it, it’s a reward for us,” he said. This backyard initiative exemplifies how far Canadians will go to nurture their passion for hockey.
As local interest surges, the homemade Zamboni serves as a delightful reminder of community collaboration and the love for the game. With winter in full swing, expect to see more hockey enthusiasts flocking to Long Lake, eager to experience this unique backyard rink and its charming Zamboni.
