Hudson’s Hope Plans $33M Community Hall Amid Urgent Need

URGENT UPDATE: The District of Hudson’s Hope, B.C. has announced a plan to construct a much-anticipated new community hall, projected to cost over $33 million, following the permanent closure of the old facility due to severe health and safety issues.

Located approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Fort St. John, Hudson’s Hope, home to around 1,000 residents, has been without a community hall since the old building, in use since the 1960s, was shut down in 2023. Mayor Travous Quibell emphasized the significant community impact, noting, “We want to keep the spirit of our community alive and expand on it.”

The new hall aims to provide essential services, including a library, indoor playground, and commercial kitchen. It will also serve as a warming shelter during winter and an emergency operations center during wildfires. District Coun. Tashana Winnicky, who leads the planning committee, stated, “We want everybody from children to seniors to have a space where they can come together and make memories.”

Despite the urgent need for a new facility, the financial challenge is considerable. The district is exploring grants and partnerships but may need to borrow a significant portion of the funding. A vote on borrowing will be presented to the community next year, which will ultimately decide the future of this critical project.

The total estimated cost of the new hall stands at $33.2 million, with $18.4 million allocated for construction, $6.2 million for contingency costs, and another $6.2 million for project management and permits. Winnicky acknowledged the daunting figure for such a small community, saying, “That $33 million feels large and intense.”

The old community hall held a wealth of memories, having hosted countless weddings, funerals, and celebrations since its inception in 1967 with support from the local Lions Club. The facility’s closure has left a void, highlighting the urgent need for a replacement.

Adding to the financial strain, Hudson’s Hope is expecting a reduction of approximately $4 million in its budget over the next five years due to a recalculation of pipeline values by B.C. Assessment, which will decrease tax revenue. “That’s something that’s really not replaceable,” Winnicky explained.

Residents are now at a crucial juncture as they await the vote on borrowing funds for the new community hall. The outcome will determine whether this ambitious project, aimed at revitalizing community spirit and providing essential services, will move forward.
