Hundreds Rally Now in Sterling for ‘Workers over Billionaires’ on Labor Day

UPDATE: Over 200 demonstrators are currently rallying in Sterling, Illinois, outside the Grandon Civic Center and post office, as part of a nationwide “Workers over Billionaires” protest on this Labor Day, September 1, 2023. The event is part of a broader movement involving thousands across the country, aiming to spotlight escalating labor struggles and income inequality.
Organized by the local group Indivisible Sauk Valley, the Sterling protest echoes the frustrations many workers feel against what they describe as systemic favoritism towards billionaires. Protesters are voicing their discontent with the administration of President Donald Trump, accusing it of prioritizing corporate interests over those of working-class individuals.
“We believe that as union members, we’re stronger together,” said organizer Alissa Kirchner, a union speech pathologist. “We may not have the money billionaires do, but our numbers give us strength.” This sentiment resonated deeply among attendees, reflecting a growing solidarity among workers from diverse sectors.
Protesters also highlighted the voices of those unable to attend, representing various workers, including fast food employees and law enforcement. VJ Vaughn of Indivisible emphasized their mission: “We’re here to support the rights of every person, especially those who can’t be out here.”
Local attorney Janet Buttron condemned the influence of billionaires in American politics, claiming, “Our country has been taken over by billionaires.” She criticized Trump for allegedly undermining democratic principles by withholding nearly $2 billion in approved funds from Illinois, calling it a blatant disregard for Congress and court orders. “It’s authoritarian behavior,” Buttron warned, referencing the militarized presence of the National Guard during recent events.
The crowd’s energy swelled as they reacted to recent remarks from White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, who reportedly dismissed concerns about militarization, suggesting such issues were only raised by “elderly white people.” This comment fueled further outrage among demonstrators, who are committed to fighting for labor rights and accountability.
Among the protestors were political hopefuls actively campaigning for their upcoming races. Fidencio Hooper-Campos, chair of the Whiteside County Democratic Committee, stated, “It’s become a normalcy for us to protest now. We have events planned throughout the year.”
Nolan Kemp, a candidate for the Illinois 74th House District, echoed the frustrations of residents, saying, “I’m unhappy with what’s happening at the national level. But as long as these people are out here standing, I’m going to be standing right next to them.”
Similarly, Oliver Sweetser, vying for the 73rd House District, shared that the protest’s message aligns closely with his campaign values, advocating for labor rights and equitable tax policies. “People recognize the injustice of the rich getting richer,” he stated.
This demonstration in Sterling is part of a larger wave of protests aiming to reshape the narrative around labor rights and economic equity. As the crowd chants and holds signs, their message is clear: the fight for workers’ rights is urgent and ongoing.
As the day unfolds, the impact of these rallies will be closely watched, signaling a heightened awareness of economic disparities and a collective demand for accountability from those in power. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
