Hundreds Receive Holiday Hampers at Vancouver’s Broadway Church
UPDATE: Hundreds of families flocked to Broadway Church in Vancouver on December 3, 2023, for a heartwarming holiday event that provided essential support during the festive season. The CityReach Care Society distributed approximately 800 “boxes of love,” filled with grocery gift cards, hygiene items, and festive gifts for children.
As demands for assistance surge, this year’s turnout reflects an urgent need for community support. Many of the families attending the event are active participants in CityReach’s food bank program, highlighting the financial strains many face during the holidays.
“A lot of the families don’t have the disposable income to buy gifts for their kids,” said Simon Gau, executive director of CityReach, in a statement to CTV News. “This is a small way that we can reach out to them and say, ‘Hey, somebody’s in your corner, somebody sees you, somebody loves you.’”
Attendee Flora Stewart, a mother of four, expressed her gratitude, stating, “Any little bit helps. It’s pretty uplifting to see all the generosity and just the Christmas spirit.” The atmosphere was filled with joy as children engaged in festive activities, meeting Santa, decorating cookies, and enjoying hot chocolate.
Children like Elliott shared their excitement: “I like how Santa is always being cool. You better be nice or else you’ll be on the naughty list – I’m on the good list!”
This annual event has become a beacon of hope for families struggling during the holiday season. With an increasing number of families relying on assistance, CityReach’s initiative serves as a reminder of the community’s compassion and willingness to support those in need.
As the holiday season continues, CityReach encourages donations to support ongoing efforts. The need for assistance is growing, and every contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of these families.
Stay tuned for updates as CityReach and other organizations work to provide essential support to the community throughout this festive season.
