UPDATE: A hunter is currently hospitalized following a shocking grizzly bear attack that occurred south of Cochrane around 1 p.m. on Thursday. The victim, a man in his 30s, was swiftly airlifted to Foothills Medical Centre by STARS Air Ambulance after sustaining serious injuries.

Authorities from Alberta Fish and Wildlife confirmed that the bear involved in the attack was shot by the hunter’s partner, who witnessed the incident. Reports indicate that this bear is believed to be dead, while another bear reportedly fled the scene. Fish and Wildlife officers are set to collect DNA samples from the victim to confirm that the bear killed was indeed the one responsible for the attack.

This incident underscores a disturbing trend: attacks on hunters are becoming increasingly frequent. Just days ago, a 63-year-old hunter, Joe Pendry, tragically passed away from a blood clot while recuperating from a separate grizzly bear attack in the Fort Steele area. Pendry had encountered a mother bear and her cubs, and in a desperate fight for survival, he shot at, punched, and even bit the bear.

Safety experts warn that these encounters pose significant risks to hunters. As investigations continue into the circumstances leading to this latest attack, officials emphasize the importance of caution in bear country, especially during hunting season.

As the situation develops, authorities urge the public to stay informed and remain vigilant in wilderness areas. The investigation into the attack is ongoing, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
