Hurricane Melissa Intensifies to Category 4, Hits Jamaica Soon
URGENT UPDATE: Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified into a Category 4 storm, threatening to bring catastrophic weather to Jamaica and southern Hispaniola as early as Monday night. The storm is expected to continue strengthening, with forecasts suggesting it could reach Category 5 status by Monday afternoon.
This morning, the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) confirmed that Hurricane Melissa has maximum sustained winds reaching 220 km/h, with higher gusts. The hurricane’s trajectory indicates it will move near or over Jamaica, impacting millions with life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides.
As Melissa approaches, residents in affected areas are urged to heed local officials’ warnings. The storm is forecasted to make landfall along Jamaica’s southern coast, bringing devastating winds and rainfall totals exceeding 500 mm, particularly in lower elevation and densely populated regions.
“The centre of Melissa is expected to move near or over Jamaica through Tuesday, across southeastern Cuba Tuesday night, and across the southeastern Bahamas on Wednesday,” NHC stated.
Forecasters warn that a slow-moving hurricane could lead to prolonged rainfall, exacerbating flooding risks. The eastern half of Jamaica is poised to bear the brunt of the storm, which could result in significant coastal flooding, erosion, and storm surges, especially around the capital, Kingston.
Officials are keeping a close eye on the storm’s potential to become one of the strongest hurricanes on record impacting Jamaica. If Hurricane Melissa reaches Category 5, it would mark only the second Atlantic hurricane season to see more than two Category 5 storms, with the record being set in 2005.
Conditions remain favorable for further intensification, with warm sea-surface temperatures and moderate wind shear fueling Melissa’s rapid growth. Experts predict that the hurricane will drift westward, allowing high winds and rain to persist over the mountainous terrain of Jamaica and southern Hispaniola.
As the storm approaches, those in the path of Hurricane Melissa should prepare for possible evacuation and stock up on essential supplies. Heavy rainfall could lead to severe flash floods and landslides, posing serious risks to life and property.
In addition to its immediate impact on Jamaica, forecasters are monitoring potential effects in Eastern Canada, where moisture from Melissa could bring heavy rainfall around Halloween.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates from The Weather Network as this situation develops. The urgency cannot be overstated, as Hurricane Melissa poses a significant threat to millions across the Caribbean.
