UPDATE: A weakened Hurricane Melissa is bringing severe weather to much of Atlantic Canada this weekend, with wind gusts up to 120 km/h and heavy rainfall expected as the storm recedes. Residents are urged to prepare for ongoing windy conditions and possible flurries as the remnants of the storm move further into the Atlantic.

On November 1, 2025, Environment Canada confirmed that Hurricane Melissa has been downgraded to a post-tropical storm. The storm, which made landfall in southwest Jamaica with winds peaking at 295 km/h, has already claimed at least 19 lives in Jamaica and 31 in Haiti.

As of Friday, parts of Atlantic Canada experienced intense weather, with rain accumulating at an astounding rate of 60 millimetres in just 10 hours. The storm is expected to continue affecting eastern areas such as Cape Breton and parts of Newfoundland into Saturday, with forecasts indicating that rain and even snow flurries could occur.

Throughout the region, wind gusts averaged around 80 km/h, creating hazardous conditions for travel and outdoor activities. Municipalities in Prince Edward Island, including Charlottetown, Stratford, and Cornwall, have postponed Halloween festivities due to the adverse weather, affecting many families eager to celebrate tonight.

As the storm continues to weaken, Environment Canada advises residents to remain cautious. Winds are forecasted to diminish overnight into Sunday, but vigilance is essential as lingering conditions may still pose risks.
