Huskies Coach Flory Declares Battle Begins Friday Night
UPDATE: The University of Saskatchewan Huskies are gearing up for an intense season opener against the Alberta Golden Bears on Friday night. Head coach Scott Flory emphasizes that rankings mean little in a fiercely competitive Canada West conference, stating, “We are in a fight every weekend.”
As the Huskies kick off their season ranked number one in the Canada West coach’s poll and ninth nationally, Flory insists his team must stay focused. “I couldn’t care less about pre-season polls. Every team is capable of winning,” he warned, highlighting the exceptional talent across western Canada.
The Huskies return to the field with a strong lineup, featuring key players like third-year receiver Ethan Clazie, who is making waves after recovering from an Achilles injury. “It felt great to come back this year and be able to make plays out there,” Clazie said, reflecting on his successful preseason performance, which included a touchdown pass against UBC.
Flory praised Clazie’s skills, saying, “Ethan is a great player… a dynamic player, he’s got great feel, he’s got great grit.” He will join a talented offensive roster that includes fellow receivers Rhett Vavra, Dawson Lennea, and 2025 CFL draft pick Daniel Wiebe, as well as running back Ryker Frank and fourth-year quarterback Anton Amundrud.
Amundrud, who showcased significant growth during the East-West Bowl in May, will play a pivotal role this season. Flory noted, “He’s got such a big arm; he can get away with things that other quarterbacks can’t.”
On the defensive side, the Huskies will rely on returning linebackers Seth Hundeby, Jacob Goldstone, and Ethan Laing. The defensive line looks solid, featuring starters Chaz Walker, Riece Kack, and Jaxson Kramchynsky. Additionally, Reece McCormick and Nathan Jule are back in action after injuries sidelined them last season.
The Huskies will face a tough challenge against the Golden Bears on September 1, 2025. Fans can look forward to their home opener at Griffiths Stadium against the UBC Thunderbirds on September 5, 2025, where the energy and expectations will be high.
With a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers, the Huskies are poised for an exciting season. As Coach Flory emphasizes, every game is a battle, and fans can expect a thrilling ride ahead.
