Iqaluit-Sinaa Candidates Clash on Fiscal Responsibility Ahead of Vote

UPDATE: The race for Iqaluit-Sinaa MLA is heating up as candidates reveal contrasting visions for fiscal responsibility and access to services just weeks before the election. Incumbent MLA Janet Pitsiulaaq Brewster and challenger Robin Anawak are focusing their campaigns on how to effectively manage government spending while addressing pressing community needs.
Brewster, who has served for the past four years, emphasized her experience in government and her commitment to delivering results without overspending. “I aim to leverage my decades of work in the Department of Health and my role as MLA to enhance housing and community safety,” she stated. Her campaign highlights the importance of navigating government programs effectively to assist constituents in overcoming challenges in their lives.
Anawak, on the other hand, is vocal about the need for a reevaluation of government expenditures, particularly on contract workers. “We must find innovative ways to make our dollars go farther,” Anawak asserted. He emphasized the importance of strategic investments to reduce reliance on expensive fly-in workers and to build local capacity in Nunavut.
The candidates are also addressing crucial issues such as mental health and addictions, which Brewster pointed out as significant areas of concern for the community. “I want to be a voice for my constituents and ensure that their needs are met,” she said.
On the topic of government responsiveness, Anawak believes there has been progress but insists that ongoing challenges persist. “Despite the budget for Nunavut growing five-fold since 1999, many of the same struggles remain,” he noted, urging for strong leadership that aligns with community aspirations.
Voting is set to begin soon. Residents of Iqaluit-Sinaa can cast their votes during advance polling from October 13 to October 23 at the Catholic Parish Hall from noon to 7 p.m. The main election day is scheduled for October 27 at the Aqsarniit Ballroom from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
As the election draws near, both candidates are rallying support and articulating their visions for a sustainable and responsive government that prioritizes the needs of Nunavummiut. Voters are urged to engage in the process, as their participation will shape the future of Iqaluit-Sinaa.
