UPDATE: Iqaluit Transit is set to officially launch its long-awaited bus service on January 19, 2024, marking the first public transit option in Iqaluit since 2005. This new development promises to provide a much-needed transportation alternative for Iqalummiut, making commuting significantly more affordable and accessible.

The privately funded service marks a pivotal moment for the community, which has been without a bus since the City of Iqaluit cut the service due to high operational costs nearly two decades ago. Owner Jacinto Marques is determined to make this service reliable for residents, stating, “The taxi is $9.50, which is very expensive. We wanted to make it affordable for the community of Iqaluit.”

Adult fares will be set at just $5, with elders paying $4 and children under 12 riding for free. The planned route will feature 18 stops across Iqaluit, from Apex to the airport, although stop locations are still under discussion. Buses will operate from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, with limited service on Saturdays and no service on Sundays.

Residents are eagerly anticipating this new option. Local resident Don Kunuk expressed excitement, saying, “New bus in Iqaluit? It’s about time. Sometimes we have to walk to stores. I like it.” Another resident, Derek Allerton, highlighted that the bus will serve as a vital third option for transportation, alongside walking and taxis.

Iqaluit Transit has faced several challenges leading up to this launch, including delays due to a fire at their facility and issues securing necessary permits from the city. Marques noted that a permit application for the bus stops was submitted on November 14, but it was incomplete due to a lack of required documentation. “There’s been some delays in the permits because we do need permission to access some of the public areas,” he explained. The company has since enlisted professional help to expedite the process.

In an email statement, Geoffrey Byrne, spokesperson for the City of Iqaluit, confirmed the status of the permit application and the ongoing communication with Iqaluit Transit to resolve outstanding issues.

As part of the rollout, Iqaluit Transit plans to offer free test rides to residents starting in early January, allowing the community to experience the service before its official launch date. This initiative not only demonstrates the company’s commitment to accessibility but also aims to engage the community and encourage ridership.

Residents of Iqaluit are encouraged to prepare for this transformative service, which promises to enhance mobility and affordability in the region. The anticipation is palpable, and with just weeks to go, the excitement for Iqaluit Transit is building. Stay tuned for updates as the launch date approaches.
