Israel to Enter Second Phase of Gaza Ceasefire Plan Soon
UPDATE: Israel is poised to enter the crucial second phase of its Gaza ceasefire plan, according to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who made the announcement during a press conference in Jerusalem on October 15, 2023. Netanyahu highlighted the urgency of this transition, stating that discussions regarding “opportunities for peace” will take place with President Donald Trump later this month.
“We very shortly expect to move to the second phase, which is more difficult, or equally difficult,” Netanyahu remarked, emphasizing the challenges that lie ahead. The prime minister’s comments come as the fragile truce between Israel and Hamas continues to show signs of strain, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
Netanyahu detailed the framework of the next phase, which will require the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip. This comes after the first phase of the plan concludes with the return of the last remaining Israeli hostage from Gaza. The ambitious ceasefire strategy also includes the establishment of an International Stabilization Force, potentially involving troops from countries like Indonesia and Azerbaijan, in collaboration with Egypt.
The proposed plan envisions a transitional government formed under a “Board of Peace” to help maintain order as Israeli Defense Forces withdraw from Gaza. Netanyahu aims to discuss the timeline for disarming Hamas with Trump, including whether these international forces will be deployed and their potential country of origin.
As tensions remain high, Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, warned that ongoing Israeli strikes are fostering “a lot of uncertainty” regarding stability in the Middle East. Qatar, alongside Egypt, continues to act as a mediator in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
Netanyahu pointed out that the recent two years of sustained efforts against Iran and its proxies present new opportunities for peace that Israel intends to capitalize on. He did not provide further details but emphasized the need for the commitments in the second phase to be fully realized.
With both sides on high alert, all eyes are now on the upcoming discussions between Netanyahu and Trump, where pivotal decisions about the future of Gaza and regional stability will be made.
As developments unfold, this situation remains fluid and demands immediate attention from the international community. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story.
