Jaguar Land Rover Shutdown Triggers Sharp UK Manufacturing Decline

URGENT UPDATE: The temporary shutdown of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is exacerbating the decline in UK manufacturing, as S&P Global reports the manufacturing purchasing managers’ index (PMI) has dropped to 46.2 in September, down from 47 in August. This marks the steepest decline in production in six months and signals a troubling trend for the sector.

Manufacturing activity is now significantly below the critical 50 threshold, indicating a contraction in the industry. The report highlights that both new orders and output have decreased at the fastest rates since March, as the automotive sector grapples with the fallout from a recent cyberattack that forced JLR to halt operations at its UK facilities.

As JLR struggles to recover, it is seeking a £2 billion loan from banks, while the UK government is providing a £1.5 billion loan guarantee to stabilize its finances. The ongoing situation puts additional strain on an already vulnerable manufacturing sector, which is facing challenges from US tariffs, rising energy costs, and increasing labor expenses.

Rob Dobson, director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, stated, “Manufacturers are facing an increasingly challenging environment, with intakes of new business and levels of production hit by weak market sentiment.” He added that companies within the automotive supply chain are experiencing a temporary downturn due to the impacts of the cyberattack on JLR.

The decline in new overseas orders is particularly alarming, falling at the fastest pace since April when the US imposed sweeping tariffs on global manufacturing. Employment within UK factories has also been negatively affected, registering a decline for the 11th consecutive month.

The implications of this downturn are significant, affecting not only JLR but also the wider community and economy reliant on manufacturing jobs. As the situation develops, all eyes will be on JLR’s next steps and the potential recovery of the UK manufacturing sector.

Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent matter as it evolves.
