Jessica Pegula Storms into U.S. Open Quarterfinals, Faces Krejcikova
UPDATE: Jessica Pegula is back in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open after a commanding performance, defeating Ann Li 6-1, 6-2 in just 54 minutes on September 3, 2023. The No. 4 seed is now set to face two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova on Tuesday, September 5, in a highly anticipated showdown.
Pegula has been on a tear at Flushing Meadows, not dropping a single set throughout the tournament. Her rapid victory over Li marks a significant moment, as she appears poised to make another deep run following last year’s final appearance. “Probably the best match, honestly, I’ve played since, like, before Wimbledon,” Pegula stated after her win. “I was just hitting the ball, doing everything well, executing my strategy very well.”
Krejcikova, who battled through eight match points in her previous match against Taylor Townsend, emerged victorious after a grueling 2-hour and 30-minute contest, culminating in a tense 25-minute tiebreaker in the second set. Her resilience will be tested as she faces an energized Pegula, who has shown remarkable improvement since her struggles earlier this season.
The stakes are high for Pegula, who had previously faced challenges in Grand Slam quarterfinals, with a record of 0-6 before last year’s upset over Iga Swiatek. Now, with renewed confidence, she aims to capitalize on her current form and pursue victory at the U.S. Open.
In other notable matches, world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz showcased his talent with a stunning behind-the-back shot during his straight-sets win over Arthur Rinderknech, making him the youngest man in the Open era to reach 13 Grand Slam quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz, the last American man remaining in the tournament, secured his spot in the next round by defeating Tomas Machac in straight sets.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Monday’s match between Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka, revisiting their historic 2019 encounter. Alongside them, Wimbledon champions Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek will also take to the court, setting the stage for more thrilling action.
With the excitement building, Pegula’s next match against Krejcikova promises to be a highlight of the quarterfinals, as fans eagerly await the outcome of this high-stakes encounter.
