Jets Struggle in Front of Comrie, Fall 4-3 to Hurricanes
UPDATE: The Winnipeg Jets fell short in a dramatic 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on November 21, 2025, leaving fans and players lamenting their lack of support for goaltender Eric Comrie. Comrie, stepping in for injured star Connor Hellebuyck, was scored on just 16 seconds into the game, but showed resilience with 24 saves throughout the match.
Head coach Scott Arniel expressed his disappointment with the team’s defensive efforts, stating, “We need to play better in front of him.” The Jets are now navigating a challenging period, with Hellebuyck expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks due to knee surgery.
Despite the early setback, the Jets fought back. Gabriel Vilardi scored two goals, while Josh Morrissey extended his point streak to seven games with a goal and an assist. However, the team could not overcome the Hurricanes, who capitalized on defensive mistakes to secure their victory.
“We got caught right off the bat on a transition play,” Arniel added. “Comrie was rock solid, but we need to clean up our mistakes.” Comrie’s performance was commendable, but the Jets’ defense struggled, allowing the Hurricanes to take an early lead that they would not relinquish.
The game saw Jordan Staal net two goals for Carolina, with Seth Jarvis also contributing a shorthanded goal. The Hurricanes, now at 14-5-2, demonstrated their offensive prowess, capitalizing on opportunities while the Jets faltered.
In a moment of camaraderie, defenseman Dylan DeMelo shared a light-hearted exchange with Comrie after making a key play to assist him, emphasizing the team’s desire to support their goalie. “He’s one of our hardest workers,” DeMelo said, acknowledging Comrie’s contributions on and off the ice.
Next, the Jets must regroup and focus on improving their defensive strategy ahead of their upcoming matches. Comrie’s determination and the team’s response will be crucial as they navigate this challenging stretch without their star goaltender.
In a touching moment, the Jets also honored former player Nikolaj Ehlers with a video tribute, underscoring the emotional connection within the team and its community. Ehlers received an enthusiastic welcome from the crowd, reminding everyone of the bonds that extend beyond the rink.
As the season progresses, the Jets are urged to rally together and bolster their performance to ensure they can compete effectively in Hellebuyck’s absence. The urgency to adapt and succeed is palpable as they aim to regain their momentum.
