UPDATE: The Winnipeg Jets are facing urgent calls for improved defensive play after a 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on November 21, 2025. Starting goalie Connor Hellebuyck is sidelined for four to six weeks following knee surgery, leaving Eric Comrie to step up in a challenging situation.

Comrie’s trial by fire began just 16 seconds into the game, when Jordan Staal scored on a transition play. Jets head coach Scott Arniel expressed empathy for Comrie, who managed to make 24 saves despite the early setback. “Obviously, we got caught right off the bat there,” Arniel said.

The Jets rallied with a strong effort in the first period, highlighted by Gabriel Vilardi scoring twice and Josh Morrissey extending his point streak to seven games with a goal. Morrissey acknowledged the need for the team to play better in front of Comrie, stating, “We need to play better in front of him.”

Comrie, now 4-2-0 this season, showed resilience, making crucial stops during penalty kills. “He was rock solid… we need to clean up a couple of mistakes for him,” Arniel added, underscoring the Jets’ commitment to supporting their goaltender.

The game had emotional moments, including a video tribute for forward Nikolaj Ehlers, who played 674 games with the Jets before joining the Hurricanes. Ehlers received a warm welcome from the crowd, emphasizing the community’s connection to its players.

While the Jets managed to pull within one goal late in the third period, they couldn’t equalize, leaving fans disappointed. “We’re a group that plays right down to the whistle,” said defenseman Dylan DeMelo, reflecting the team’s determination.

As the Jets prepare for their next matchup, the focus remains on tightening up defensive strategies to better support Comrie and secure vital points in the standings. The urgency is palpable as they seek to bounce back and reclaim their momentum in the league.
