Joliet City Square Shines Brightly at Holiday Festival, Sparks Joy
UPDATE: The newly unveiled Joliet City Square is receiving enthusiastic reviews as it serves as the centerpiece for this year’s Light Up the Holidays Festival. Just hours ago, the festive crowd gathered to witness the eagerly anticipated Christmas tree lighting, marking a significant moment for the downtown area.
Attendees, including Kookie Countryman of Joliet, expressed their excitement about the nearly completed project. “I think it’s awesome,” she exclaimed while capturing memories with family and friends in front of the city Christmas tree. The lighting ceremony, which took place earlier today, sets the stage for the annual holiday parade, a cherished event in the community.
Despite the square still being under construction, with many areas fenced off and expected to open fully on April 1, 2024, visitors are already enjoying the new features. The square boasts brick pavers, stone planters, green artificial turf, and pergolas with steel benches, all contributing to a vibrant atmosphere.
Local resident Savador Perez also shared his positive impressions, stating, “It’s really nice. We can come downtown and enjoy something.” His anticipation reflects the community’s eagerness for the square’s completion.
Additionally, Stephen Polcow from nearby Channahon noted the transformation, saying, “It’s better than the parking lot that was here before. I can’t wait until it’s finished. I’ll come here just to hang out.” His remarks highlight the square’s potential to revitalize downtown Joliet and attract more visitors.
Among the first to see the square was Darra Glavan, a lifelong Joliet resident who donated the Christmas tree for this year’s festivities. “I think it’s beautiful,” she declared. Her sentiment reflects the emotional connection many locals feel towards the enhancements in their community.
Joliet Mayor Terry D’Arcy, who was present at the event, shared his approval, stating, “It’s cool. Isn’t it?” His endorsement underscores the city’s commitment to creating a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike.
As the holiday season unfolds, the Joliet City Square stands as a beacon of community spirit and joy, despite its unfinished status. The excitement surrounding its development is palpable, with many looking forward to the full opening in just a few months.
What happens next? The city plans to move forward with construction as they prepare for a vibrant spring season, ensuring the square becomes a bustling hub for activities and gatherings. Stay tuned for further updates on this transformative project in Joliet.
