Joliet West Dominates Plainfield South, Wins 52-25 in Urgent Clash
UPDATE: In a decisive match on July 14, 2023, the Joliet West Tigers overwhelmed the Plainfield South Cougars with a commanding 52-25 victory. After a slow start to the season, the Tigers showcased their resilience and talent, making this win particularly significant for their momentum.
Despite both teams facing challenges this season, Joliet West (now 3-3) showed a clear advantage. Deven Triplett was instrumental, scoring 19 points and driving the Tigers to victory. The Tigers have been adjusting following the graduation of standout player Zion Gross and the transfer of Ethan Hillsman, both significant losses for the program. Gross is now playing at Northwest Florida State Junior College, while Hillsman, who had transferred from Tennessee, is now at Fishers High School in Indiana.
The match began with both teams struggling offensively, but the Tigers quickly gained control. After a tight first quarter, they ended the period with a lead of 18-10. The Cougars (now 1-5) struggled to find their rhythm, managing only one basket in the third quarter and failing to score for the first six minutes. This marked a stark contrast to the Tigers, who capitalized on turnovers and rebounds, demonstrating their depth and commitment.
Triplett highlighted the team’s focus, stating, “The big difference tonight was focusing on forcing turnovers and getting rebounds. We’re trusting the work and not worrying about the statistics.” Coach Jeremy Kreiger reinforced this sentiment, emphasizing that Joliet West is not rebuilding but retooling, ready to bring up new talent from their ranks.
This performance could signal a turning point for the Tigers, who have a history of bouncing back from adversity. They have successfully navigated previous roster changes, including the departures of stars like Jeremiah Fears and Justus McNair, both of whom are making waves in college basketball.
The Cougars did show flashes of potential, especially with a couple of impressive dunks from Isaiah Robertson, who led his team with eight points. However, the stark difference in experience and execution was evident throughout the game.
Looking ahead, Joliet West is set to face off against Oswego on Tuesday, while Plainfield South will take on Yorkville on the same night. With both teams eager to turn their seasons around, fans can anticipate a competitive atmosphere in these upcoming matchups.
The urgency of this victory for Joliet West cannot be overstated. As they aim to regain their footing this season, every game counts in their efforts to rebuild and maintain their status as a powerhouse in the area.
