UPDATE: Authorities confirm that the gun threat reported at NorKam Secondary School in Kamloops on November 6, 2023, was a hoax. Just before 2 p.m., police received a frantic 911 call reporting a firearm on campus, which triggered an immediate lockdown of the school.

Superintendent Jeff Pelley of the Kamloops RCMP Detachment revealed that the alarming call originated from inside the school itself. Following a swift investigation, officers discovered that a student had used an unattended phone to make the prank 911 call.

The student linked to the call was briefly detained, and authorities have since identified the suspect involved. Superintendent Pelley stated, “In order to maintain the safety of the students, a lockdown was initiated until investigators could assess the legitimacy of the report of a firearm in the school.”

The lockdown was lifted once investigators confirmed there was no credible threat to student safety. Superintendent Pelley underscored the seriousness with which the Kamloops RCMP and School District 73 approach all school threats, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a secure environment for students.

As a precaution, police have reiterated the importance of community vigilance and the consequences of making false threats. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the impact such actions can have on the school community and the resources required to respond to them.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The community is urged to report any suspicious activity to prevent future incidents of this nature. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
