Kane County Voter Registration Events Set for Sept. 16-17
URGENT UPDATE: The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County has just announced two pivotal voter registration events on September 16 and September 17, 2023, aimed at bolstering voter participation among young citizens. This initiative coincides with National Voter Registration Day, highlighting the urgency for eligible voters to take action now.
On September 16, the event will take place at Geneva Community High School, located at 416 McKinley Ave. Eligible students will have the opportunity to register during their lunch periods. The following day, September 17, registration will occur at Waubonsee Community College’s Sugar Grove campus, situated at 4S783 Illinois Route 47, during the WCC Engagement Fair.
Patti Lackman, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Central Kane County, emphasized the importance of these events. “Geneva High School has been a great partner for registration drives in the past, and we’re thrilled that they were able to accommodate us again this year,” Lackman stated. She also noted that many students may not know they can register at 17 years old if they will turn 18 before the upcoming General Election.
These events are crucial. With the next General Election over a year away, this is the perfect time for U.S. citizens who are currently 17 years old to get registered. The League aims to facilitate this process, providing a chance for students to check their registration status, update their addresses, or register for the first time.
Lackman continued, “We feel like there’s no better way to start off the school year than to have a voter check-up. Events like these also give us a chance to answer questions for students who’d like to get involved with the League of Women Voters. We are a nonpartisan organization, and we welcome members of all ages, genders, and backgrounds.”
National Voter Registration Day is an annual nonpartisan initiative designed to encourage voter registration through various public, private, and nonprofit partnerships. Since its launch in 2012, the campaign has successfully registered more than six million voters across the nation.
Voters are also encouraged to visit Vote411.org, a vital resource created by the League of Women Voters Education Fund. This nonpartisan platform aims to inform citizens about their voting options and help them navigate the registration process.
As the school year begins, these events serve as a critical reminder of the importance of civic engagement. The League of Women Voters is dedicated to supporting democracy by empowering citizens to make their voices heard at the ballot box.
