BREAKING NEWS: The Kankakee City Council has just announced a historic honor for former mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong. During a meeting on October 24, 2023, council members unanimously approved the honorary designation of “Mayor Chasity Wells-Armstrong Avenue” for several blocks of Hobbie Avenue, a pivotal route through Kankakee’s east side.

This significant recognition acknowledges Wells-Armstrong as Kankakee’s first Black mayor and only the second woman to hold the office, serving from 2017 to 2021. The honorary designation will apply to the 100 through 700 blocks and the 900 block of Hobbie Avenue, ensuring her legacy is permanently etched in the community.

The resolution was passed amidst applause, highlighting Wells-Armstrong’s pivotal role in revitalizing the area. She championed the long-awaited reconstruction of Hobbie Avenue, a project that faced delays but was ultimately prioritized through her advocacy. “I fought to make sure the Hobbie Avenue project did not fall through the cracks again,” she stated during the meeting.

In addition to Wells-Armstrong’s street designation, the council also approved the honorary name “John and Letha Malone Lane” for the 800 block of Hobbie Avenue. The Malones were beloved long-time residents and business owners, with deep roots in the community, including their daughter, current 1st Ward Alderwoman Cherry Malone Marshall.

Wells-Armstrong’s contributions extend beyond street designations. She inspired the ongoing Kankakee Riverwalk project, which is set to enhance public spaces along the river, with a key milestone being the $5 million East Riverwalk development. These initiatives reflect her commitment to improving Kankakee for future generations.

The honorary street name will be displayed beneath the official street sign, a practice the city has used to honor influential figures. Recent honorees include former Illinois Governor George Ryan and his wife, Lura Lynn, demonstrating the city’s dedication to recognizing its leaders.

As the community celebrates this honor, residents are encouraged to reflect on Wells-Armstrong’s impact and the ongoing developments in Kankakee. The city continues to push forward with plans that promise to shape its future.

Stay tuned for more updates as Kankakee embraces these significant changes, and share this news to honor the legacy of Chasity Wells-Armstrong.
