Kaysha Love Secures Fourth Monobob World Cup Gold in Austria
UPDATE: U.S. bobsled star Kaysha Love has clinched her fourth women’s monobob World Cup gold medal, delivering an exhilarating performance at the Igls track in Austria on December 2, 2023. Love surged ahead with a stunning second-run time of 55.97 seconds, securing victory in a fiercely competitive race.
In a dramatic turn, Love trailed behind Australia’s Bree Walker after the first heat but rallied to claim the lead in the final run. Her impressive performance not only earned her the gold but also positioned her in a tie for the top spot in the World Cup monobob standings alongside Germany’s Laura Nolte, who finished just 0.17 seconds behind her.
The competition saw a tight finish with Germany’s Lisa Buckwitz taking third and Walker ultimately placing fourth. Canadian athlete Melissa Lotholz, representing Barrhead, Alberta, finished in fifth, while other Canadians struggled as Kristen Bujnowski and Cynthia Appiah placed tenth and fourteenth, respectively. Former Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries, now competing for the U.S., came in ninth.
The excitement didn’t stop there. In the men’s two-man event, a thrilling rivalry unfolded as Germany’s Johannes Lochner edged out teammate Francesco Friedrich, winning by just five-hundredths of a second. Lochner’s time of 1:45.08 solidified his perfect record this season, as he and partner Georg Fleischhauer maintained a narrow lead over Friedrich and Alexander Schaller, who clocked in at 1:45.13.
The weekend will also feature two-woman and four-man bobsled races in Igls, promising more thrilling competition. However, the skeleton races have been canceled due to athletes voting against inadequate track conditions, with rescheduling set for December 20-21 in Sigulda, Latvia.
In related news, at the luge test events in Cortina D’Ampezzo, Italy, Germany showcased their dominance, sweeping wins in various categories. U.S. duo Marcus Mueller and Ansel Haugsjaa secured second in men’s doubles, while Germany’s Hannes Orlamünder and Paul Gubitz took gold.
As the bobsled season heats up, fans and competitors alike are eager for the next round of races, showcasing the grit and talent of these elite athletes. Stay tuned for updates as the action continues in Austria and beyond!
