Kingston City Council Demands Stronger Commitment from VIA Rail
UPDATE: Kingston City Council is urgently calling for VIA Rail to commit to maintaining and enhancing rail services in the area after a proposed service cut was postponed. This crucial decision comes amid growing backlash from Kingston and surrounding communities in eastern Ontario, who rely on these connections for travel.
The Express Route, initially set to launch as a three-month pilot on September 29, faced delays due to complaints from CN rail operations. This postponement has left residents in Kingston, Oshawa, and Belleville anxious about the future of their vital transportation options.
During a council meeting on Tuesday night, Mayor Bryan Paterson presented a motion urging VIA Rail to guarantee existing service levels while also expanding available routes. “The choices they’re making are working in the wrong direction,” Paterson stated emphatically. “Even with the status quo, I don’t think that we should be satisfied. I see so much potential for what rail service could be to and from Kingston.”
Paterson highlighted the community’s need for improved service, specifically advocating for a late train from Toronto, which would offer residents a much-needed option for returning home from events. The city plans to conduct a survey to gauge community usage and is hopeful that VIA Rail will respond positively.
Frustration among council members is palpable, particularly as VIA Rail seems poised to boost ridership while simultaneously reducing service options. Councillor Brandon Tozzo expressed concern over the uncertainty, stating, “What are they thinking? The chaos that this has brought on to the community cannot be understated.”
The potential cuts are particularly alarming, as VIA Rail faces a growing crisis, including a requirement to pay out $31 million in travel vouchers. If the service reductions proceed, key trains—specifically Trains 60/50, 61, 68, and 69—would no longer stop in Kingston, exacerbating the community’s transportation issues.
As the situation develops, residents and officials alike are left wondering about the future of rail services in Kingston. The council’s push for a stronger commitment from VIA Rail underlines the urgent need for reliable transportation options that meet the demands of local communities.
