URGENT UPDATE: Lakeland Ford is on a mission to combat hunger in Prince Albert, transforming its showroom into a vital collection point for non-perishable food as part of the nationwide “Fill a Ford” campaign. This initiative, which has gained momentum across thousands of dealerships, aims to collect over one million pounds of food by October 6, 2023.

The campaign is gaining traction just as the Prince Albert Food Bank faces an unprecedented surge in demand. Executive director Kim Scruby revealed that the organization is now distributing between 1,100 and 1,200 hampers each month, more than double the amount from just a few years ago. “With rising costs of living, many families are forced to cut back on groceries,” Scruby explained. “This community support is crucial.”

In collaboration with local partners, Lakeland Ford encourages community members to donate essential items, particularly canned proteins, which are urgently needed. General manager Brad Thibaudeau has spearheaded efforts to mobilize staff and customers, emphasizing the importance of raising awareness about hunger in Canada. “Campaigns like this remind people that many are struggling,” Thibaudeau stated.

Shoppers can contribute by purchasing pre-packed bags of food at Lake Country Co-op. As an incentive, Lakeland Ford is offering a $20 service voucher to those who participate. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, showcasing the spirit of giving that defines Prince Albert.

The timing of this initiative is critical. Scruby highlighted that fall is one of the busiest seasons for the Food Bank, with demand peaking as families face increased financial pressures. “Only 18 percent of our funding comes from the government; the rest relies on the goodwill of local businesses and individuals,” he said, underscoring the vital role of partnerships in sustaining their operations.

As the campaign continues, donations can be dropped off at Lakeland Ford until its conclusion. Thibaudeau expressed pride in the community’s response, saying, “The community came together, and we’re very proud of everyone who helped out.”

This urgent initiative not only addresses immediate food insecurity but also serves to remind Canadians of the ongoing hunger crisis affecting many families. As the campaign progresses, all eyes will be on the final tally of food collected, which will reflect the community’s commitment to supporting those in need.

Immediate action is needed—donate today to help fill the shelves of the Prince Albert Food Bank and support your neighbors in their time of need.
