Langley Kettle Campaign Surges Past $205,000 Target in Final Days
UPDATE: The annual Kettle Campaign in Langley has just surpassed its fundraising goal, reaching an impressive $205,943 as of January 5, 2024. This surge of community generosity comes in the final days of the campaign, exceeding the initial target of $180,000.
Dan Donkers, the Salvation Army operations manager, expressed his gratitude, stating, “We have an amazing, generous community. Especially with the last week, people just really stepped up and gave.” This overwhelming support highlights the spirit of giving during the Christmas season, showcasing the local commitment to helping those in need.
For those who missed the opportunity to donate at volunteer stations in December, contributions can still be made through the Gateway of Hope website. The campaign saw a remarkable increase in new volunteers this year, resulting in fewer empty shifts compared to last year, when the campaign fell about $10,000 short of its goal.
Donkers praised the dedicated volunteers, saying, “We had such a great group that worked hard, endured cold and rain, all to support our cause.” Their efforts included ringing bells at various locations, amplifying the message of compassion and support for the community.
The Kettle Campaign is one of Canada’s largest charitable events, with funds raised remaining local to support Salvation Army programs. In Langley, donations are directed to the Gateway of Hope, which provided over 100,000 meals last year, along with emergency shelter beds and transitional housing. The funds also support community outreach initiatives such as school supplies, Christmas hampers, and summer camp scholarships for children.
The tradition of the Kettle Campaign traces back to 1891 in San Francisco, initiated by Captain Joseph McFee as a way to provide meals for families in need. His idea of placing a kettle for donations sparked a movement that has now reached communities across the globe.
As the campaign closes, the impact of this local fundraising effort will resonate well into the new year, demonstrating the power of community spirit and collective action. Donkers emphasized the ongoing need for support, inviting everyone to continue contributing to make a difference in the lives of those in Langley.
This story is developing, and further updates will follow as the community continues to rally around its charitable initiatives.
