UPDATE: The Municipality of Leamington is set to honor Canadian veterans with two new commemorative crosswalks, just days ahead of Remembrance Day. Installation is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, weather permitting, at the intersection of Mill Street East and Princess Street, leading directly to the town’s cenotaph in Dieppe Park.

These crosswalks will feature striking red and white stripes, a soldier’s silhouette, and the words ‘Lest We Forget’, creating a permanent tribute that encourages community reflection. Mayor Hilda MacDonald expressed the significance of the project, stating, “These commemorative crosswalks will stand as a lasting symbol of gratitude and remembrance.” She emphasized their role in allowing the community to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who served.

As installation proceeds, Princess Street will be temporarily closed between Orange Street and Mill Street, which may cause minor delays for drivers in the area. The municipality aims to complete the project in time for Leamington’s annual Remembrance Day ceremony scheduled for Tuesday, November 11, starting at 10:35 a.m.

This initiative is part of a broader movement, with similar tributes being recently unveiled by organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 255 in Windsor, which installed a commemorative walkway along Wyandotte Street East to honor local veterans.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the upcoming ceremony and reflect on the courage and sacrifices of those who have served. The new crosswalks will not only beautify the area but also serve as a poignant reminder of the freedoms enjoyed today, thanks to the bravery of veterans.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the installation begins.
