Liam Draxl Secures Dramatic Davis Cup Victory for Canada
UPDATE: In a nail-biting finish, Liam Draxl led Canada to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brazil in the Davis Cup Qualifiers at the University of British Columbia on Saturday night. Draxl, who battled through an ankle injury, ensured Canada’s advancement to the second qualifiers in September against either Slovakia or France.
The decisive match was marked by intense pressure, as Draxl delivered a solid 6-3, 6-4 win over Gustavo Heide. Earlier, Gabriel Diallo had rallied to bring the tie to a deciding match, showcasing the resilience of the Canadian team.
Draxl, reflecting on his performance, stated, “This was probably the biggest match of my career. It means so much for me to play for your flag and country.” His determination was evident as he recovered from a mid-match ankle sprain to secure the win, proving crucial in clinching the tie.
The day started with Draxl teaming up with Cleeve Harper against Brazil’s formidable duo of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos. Despite their best efforts, Draxl and Harper fell short in a close match, losing 6-3, 4-6, 5-7. However, the experience gained from facing these top-ranked players will be invaluable moving forward.
Captain Frank Dancevic praised his team’s character, highlighting their ability to bounce back after tough moments. “It’s not easy coming back after tough losses,” he said. “Liam had to come back 2 ½ hours later to play singles, and that’s very emotional.”
Draxl took control of the singles match early, leading 4-2 before a slip resulted in a minor injury. After a brief medical timeout and some ankle taping, he returned to dominate the court, demonstrating his skill with powerful backhand winners.
In the meantime, Diallo faced an uphill battle after losing his previous match to Heide in a surprising upset. He turned the tide on Saturday, showing tenacity and improved return game, culminating in a decisive third-set tiebreaker victory.
“I wanted to play the important moments with a little more conviction,” Diallo commented. “I controlled myself and didn’t let my opponent dictate.” His performance was a testament to the depth and resilience of the Canadian team, which continues to build on its success in international tennis.
With this victory, Canada has not only secured its place in the next round but has also demonstrated the strength of its emerging talent. Fans eagerly await the upcoming matches in September, as the team aims for a spot in the final eight.
