Lisle Dominates Joliet Central in Urgent Volleyball Match

UPDATE: In a decisive match on October 16, 2023, the Lisle Lions swept the Joliet Central Steelmen with scores of 25-22 and 25-18, marking a significant turnaround for the Lions after a rocky start to the season.
DEVELOPING: Lisle’s victory is a testament to their resilience, especially as they played without starting setter Anna Gorzkowski. The Lions, now at 7-10 for the season, have rebounded from an initial five-game losing streak, showcasing their determination and strategic adjustments.
The Steelmen, starting off the season strong at 5-2, faced their fourth consecutive loss, further complicating their path as they struggle to regain momentum. Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed frustration over the team’s slow starts, stating, “It’s tough to start out five to six points down and try to bring yourself back.”
The match began with Lisle taking an early lead, dominating the first set with a swift 5-0 run. However, a timeout and tactical adjustments from Joliet Central allowed them to tie the game at 20-20 in a thrilling comeback effort. Unfortunately, Lisle’s Brooklyn Burton and Kendall Koloff delivered critical kills that sealed the first set for the Lions.
In the second set, Joliet Central briefly led 5-4 before Lisle regained control, fueled by impressive kills from Burton. The Lions maintained their lead, ultimately closing out the match with a strong finish.
Burton led the Lions with nine kills, while Koloff contributed six kills, showcasing their offensive strength. Joliet Central’s standout player, Camryn Brown, recorded nine digs, underlining the team’s defensive efforts despite the loss.
“We had kind of a slow start with a lot of injuries,” said Lisle head coach Payton Litney. “But we’re getting everybody back now. It’s been a slow burn but I’m hoping it’s going to keep burning the rest of the year.”
Looking ahead, Lisle will face Streator on the road, while Joliet Central heads to Minooka for senior night on the same day. Both teams are eager to capitalize on their learnings from this match as they continue their seasons.
Burton emphasized the importance of communication and focus for Lisle, stating, “We’ve just got to keep getting the job done.” The urgency of this match underscores the competitive nature of girls’ volleyball as teams fight for prominence in their leagues.
This match serves as a critical reminder of the unpredictability and excitement of the sport, making it a must-watch as the season progresses.
