Local Firm Donates $2,000 to Esquimalt Ribfest After Scam

BREAKING: A local company has stepped up to donate $2,000 to Esquimalt Ribfest after a devastating scam involving 3D-printed drink tokens left organizers and charities reeling. The community’s swift response underscores a powerful commitment to supporting local causes, even in the face of adversity.
This past weekend, approximately 50,000 attendees flocked to Esquimalt for the much-anticipated Ribfest, a beloved celebration of southern BBQ that also serves as a fundraiser for local charities. Unfortunately, organizers were hit hard when they discovered that scammers had been using a 3D printer to replicate the event’s drink tokens, resulting in a loss of thousands of dollars intended to benefit local youth organizations.
“We were annoyed and bothered that someone would steal from a charity. It’s like reaching into the Salvation Army kettle and grabbing cash and running,” expressed Tom Woods, chair of Esquimalt Ribfest. “It’s about as low as you can get.”
In a dramatic turnaround, the community rallied behind the Ribfest, offering support through emails, tech assistance, and donations. Among the first to respond was Sasquatch Heat Pumps, whose owner Dale Morton stated, “It kinda tugged at a heartstring. You don’t want to leave the kids out. It’s just an easy spot to step in and do some good.”
The overwhelming support has allowed organizers to recover the lost funds and potentially surpass their original fundraising goals. “We’ve probably recovered that money, plus,” Woods confirmed. “The response has been overwhelming.”
In light of this incident, organizers are implementing changes for next year’s Ribfest. Instead of drink tokens, they will utilize wristbands to prevent future scams, ensuring that the event continues to thrive and support community initiatives.
Esquimalt Ribfest has a storied history, having raised nearly $2 million for local charities over its decade-long run. The upcoming Ribfest will not only carry on the tradition but will also serve as a testament to the resilience and generosity of the Esquimalt community.
As the event wraps up, organizers remain optimistic about future fundraising efforts. With the community’s faith in humanity restored, Ribfest is set to continue its mission, bringing people together for great food and an even greater cause.
Stay tuned for more updates as Esquimalt Ribfest prepares for next year’s event and continues to support local charities.
