Local Poets Ignite Positivity in Prince Albert Poetry Walk
UPDATE: A vibrant gathering of local poets transformed the Rotary Trail in Prince Albert on October 1, 2023, during the annual Culture Days event, showcasing a powerful message of positivity. The free Poetry Walk attracted residents and former locals alike, all eager to share their reflections on the theme “Positive PA.”
Poet Lorna Blakeney kicked off the event, with her words echoing the sentiments of community and belonging. The event provided a platform for writers to present their work, generating an uplifting atmosphere along the scenic riverbank.
Former resident Sharon Bird, who contributed her poem to the walk, expressed her deep emotional ties to the city. “I haven’t lived in Prince Albert for quite a few years, but I want to emphasize what holds people here,” Bird stated passionately. She highlighted that despite the city’s challenges, a strong sense of community prevails: “Yeah, bad things happen. Good things happen too. It’s like any place… It’s about people.”
With ten poems displayed along the trail from Riverside School to Diefenbaker Bridge, the Poetry Walk aims to inspire connection and reflection among residents. Organizer Lynda Monahan affirmed the significance of the project, stating, “It highlights all kinds of good things. It gets people down here.” The poems will remain accessible throughout Culture Days, allowing residents to engage with the art of poetry at their leisure.
Bird noted her surprise at being featured first in this year’s lineup, expressing gratitude for the opportunity. “I am not a natural speaker. I like to write, I like words,” she admitted, capturing the essence of many poets who thrive behind the scenes.
The Pop-Up Poetry Walk builds on Monahan’s previous “Hope” poetry project, demonstrating a commitment to fostering creativity and connection within the community. As she assured attendees, “As long as the city is willing to do it, I will be ready.”
This event underscores the importance of community spirit and the arts in navigating life’s complexities, emphasizing that positivity can flourish even in challenging times.
Expect to see more developments from Prince Albert’s Culture Days as local artists continue to share their voices and stories, fostering a deeper sense of belonging among residents.
