Lula Optimistic About US-Brazil Trade Deal After Trump Talks
UPDATE: Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed strong optimism today regarding a potential trade deal with the United States following a productive meeting with President Donald Trump in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Lula revealed that Trump practically “guaranteed” progress on the negotiations during their discussions on July 15, 2023, held at a regional summit.
During a news conference earlier today, Lula described the meeting as “very good,” affirming that he presented Trump with a document outlining Brazil’s stance against recent 40% tariffs imposed by the U.S. He emphasized that the tariffs, put in place due to claims of an economic emergency linked to Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, were based on “mistaken information.”
Trump indicated a willingness to reconsider the tariffs, stating, “I think we should be able to make some good deals for both countries.” Lula reiterated that Brazil is one of only three nations in the Group of 20 with which the U.S. maintains a trade surplus, reporting a significant $6.8 billion trade surplus last year.
Lula urged that Bolsonaro’s legal troubles should not impact their trade discussions, saying, “Bolsonaro is part of the past now in Brazilian history.” This assertion highlights Lula’s attempt to shift focus away from Bolsonaro’s recent conviction related to an attempted coup.
In addition to trade discussions, Lula extended an offer to assist in mediating the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, where President Nicolas Maduro has accused the U.S. of aggression. Lula, who celebrated his 80th birthday today, expressed optimism about his legacy and future, stating, “I hope to live up to 120 years old.”
As the situation develops, Lula remains confident that a resolution will be reached in the coming days. The outcome of these negotiations could have significant implications for both nations, especially as they navigate complex economic and diplomatic landscapes.
