UPDATE: A young Lykoi cat named Krakken is stealing the spotlight at the No Name Cat Club show in Owen Sound, where participants are showcasing their felines in a Halloween-themed event. The show, held at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre on October 14, 2023, has quickly gained attention as Krakken, dubbed the “werewolf cat,” draws crowds with his unique appearance.

Krakken’s owner, Brenda Frame, noted, “He gets a lot of attention. That is why he is just so calm and sits here with me.” This breed, only recognized by the Canadian Cat Association for championship status since 2023, has captivated visitors with its wolf-like features and affectionate demeanor.

The Lykoi breed, whose name derives from the Greek word for “wolf,” was first discovered in Virginia in 2010. Initially mistaken for sick animals due to their sparse fur, medical tests confirmed they were a healthy natural mutation. Their striking coat combines white and dark guard hairs, giving them a distinctive roan appearance.

Frame, who travels from Niagara to participate, remarked on the breed’s growing popularity, stating, “I was down at the international cat show last weekend in Cleveland and there were 18 of them down there.” Krakken celebrated his first birthday just days before the show and has already achieved double grand champion status, proving to be a standout performer.

“He is quite the showman and he loves showing,” Frame added. As part of the Halloween theme, participants compete for prizes based on cage decorations, adding a festive spirit to the competition. The show features four classes of cats: household pets, championship cats, premiership alters, and kittens. Judges meticulously evaluate each category, awarding the top felines with ribbons and accolades.

Terry Farrell, a seasoned judge with nearly 40 years of experience, emphasized the importance of the breed standards, stating, “There are some beautiful cats here today. They are absolutely gorgeous cats.” He highlighted the unique opportunity to evaluate cats that have undergone years of selective breeding, making each one a “designer cat.”

The No Name Cat Club show is not only a competition but a gathering for cat enthusiasts from across Ontario, Quebec, and even the Maritimes. Organizers like Heather Garvie have dedicated months to prepare for this event, which includes a marketplace for vendors and a welcoming atmosphere for all.

The show continues on October 15, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with tickets priced at $10 for adults, $8 for students, and $6 for seniors and children under 12. A family pass is available for $25. Attendees can look forward to a variety of breeds, from the massive Maine Coon to the tiny Cornish Rex.

With the excitement surrounding Krakken and the Lykoi breed, this year’s cat show is not just a competition but a celebration of the unique bond between cats and their owners. For those interested in joining the No Name Cat Club or learning more, details can be found on their website.
