Major Highway 7 Expansion Milestone Announced by Ontario Officials

BREAKING: Ontario’s Minister of Transportation, Prabmeet Sarkaria, announced a significant milestone in the expansion of Highway 7 during a press event in Kitchener on Thursday. This development comes as the province has secured critical permits needed to advance the long-awaited construction project.

Earlier today, Minister Sarkaria revealed that the government received the Department of Fisheries and Oceans permit on October 1, allowing construction to progress on key components of the Highway 7 project. “This is a huge milestone for this project,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of this approval for future developments.

The newly acquired permits will enable the province to start the design and bidding process for a new bridge over the Grand River. The estimated cost for this bridge alone ranges between $100 million and $250 million. However, the entire Highway 7 expansion is projected to exceed $1 billion, with no specified completion date.

In conjunction with the federal permits, Sarkaria confirmed that the province has also obtained clearance to remove trees along the designated construction route, located just north of the existing Highway 7. This marks a crucial step forward for a project that has been on the books since its initial approval in 2007.

Despite limited updates over the years, including the completion of the Victoria Street bridge, there are signs of renewed momentum. According to Ministry of Transportation documents, the replacement of the Frederick Street bridge, another aspect of the Highway 7 expansion, is anticipated to commence in 2026, with completion expected by late 2027.

The urgency of this project cannot be overstated, as Highway 7 has become increasingly congested during peak hours, reflecting the rapid growth of both Waterloo Region and Guelph. Sarkaria reiterated that the Highway 7 expansion remains a top priority for the provincial government, highlighting its impact on local commuters.

In addition to the Highway 7 update, the Ontario government announced an agreement with CN Rail to acquire land essential for the construction of dedicated GO Transit tracks along the busy Kitchener Line. This agreement is expected to enhance public transit options for residents.

This announcement comes as the region celebrates the restoration of ION train service following a disruption earlier today due to a collision in Kitchener.
