Major House Move Begins Wednesday, Causing Delays on Sask. Highways

URGENT UPDATE: Starting Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a massive house and garage move will disrupt traffic across Saskatchewan highways for the next four days. The journey stretches nearly 200 kilometers from the Lajord area southeast of Regina to a site near Strasbourg, causing significant delays and closures on Highways 1, 6, 10, 22, 33, 48, and 734.

Officials at Neufeld Building Movers anticipate that the most affected area will be Highway 6, particularly on Thursday when the oversized load passes through. The largest segment of the freight measures an astonishing 60 feet wide, necessitating temporary highway closures as it navigates the valley.

Kerry Neufeld, of Neufeld Building Movers, confirmed,

“We’re gonna have traffic signs… We are going to be closing the highway for a period of time where the load will go through the valley.”

Detours will be implemented where necessary, and drivers should remain vigilant for signage indicating alternative routes.

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways advises drivers to monitor the ‘over-dimensional loads’ bulletin on the Highway Hotline for real-time updates. Dan Palmer, a ministry spokesperson, stressed,

“We sincerely appreciate the patience of everyone. Folks should expect delays.”

While daytime traffic will experience disruptions, night-time drivers should be unaffected, as Neufeld assured that the freight would be parked off the road during those hours.

Emergency vehicles will not face delays, thanks to established protocols ensuring their swift passage. Neufeld stated, “We do anything and everything that it takes that we get out of the way so that emergency vehicles are not slowed up at all.”

As this extraordinary move unfolds over the next few days, residents and commuters are urged to plan ahead to avoid potential disruptions. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation as it impacts travel across Saskatchewan.
