Major MOU Signed for North Coast Transmission Line to Power LNG Facility
BREAKING: A significant memorandum of understanding has just been signed, securing Ksi Lisims LNG as a major customer for the proposed North Coast Transmission Line. This pivotal agreement was formalized on January 20, 2025, in Prince George, and aims to clarify the delivery of up to 600 megawatts of clean electricity to the floating LNG facility located on Nisga’a Treaty Lands.
Energy Minister Adrian Dix, BC Hydro CEO Charlotte Mitha, and Nisga’a Nation President Eva Clayton were present for the signing, underscoring the urgency of this development. Mitha emphasized that this agreement marks a crucial step in securing Ksi Lisims as a strong customer for the North Coast Transmission Line, which is essential for the region’s energy demands.
Ksi Lisims LNG is poised to attract nearly $30 billion in investment, creating thousands of skilled jobs and solidifying Canada’s status as a leading global LNG exporter. The facility is committed to being net-zero ready by 2030. Once connected to BC Hydro’s clean-electricity grid, it will produce LNG with net-zero emissions, providing British Columbia with a competitive edge by offering reliable, low-carbon energy.
“This signing is a critical step in connecting Ksi Lisims to BC Hydro’s clean-electricity grid,” Clayton stated. “It offers the clarity needed to advance our project toward producing the world’s lowest emission LNG while ensuring environmental protection and creating lasting benefits for the Nisga’a Nation and surrounding communities.”
The memorandum is also designed to propel Ksi Lisims LNG toward a final investment decision, reaffirming the necessity of the North Coast Transmission Line. The Energy Ministry reports that the region is currently experiencing rapid growth in sectors such as mining, critical minerals, LNG, ports, and technology. The demand for electricity is now surpassing the existing capacity of the 500-kilovolt transmission line, which spans 450 kilometers between Prince George and Terrace.
Mitha noted, “Ksi Lisims LNG is a significant customer. Their commitment highlights the strong interest from other customers eager to connect to the line.” This investment is projected to deliver the clean electricity essential to power major industries, expand trade, and strengthen communities across the north coast.
The North Coast Transmission Line is estimated to generate approximately 9,700 direct full-time jobs, contribute nearly $10 billion annually to the gross domestic product, and yield around $950 million in public revenues for provincial and municipal governments. Both Ksi Lisims LNG and the North Coast Transmission Line have been designated as “nationally significant” by the federal government.
In a November 2025 announcement, Prime Minister Mark Carney identified these projects as priorities for fast-tracking through the government’s new Major Projects Office, emphasizing their importance to the economy.
Looking ahead, the Energy Ministry outlines critical next steps for the transmission project, including awarding the clearing and access contract for Phase 1, obtaining necessary permits and regulatory approvals, and finalizing a decision from BC Hydro’s board of directors. Construction is anticipated to commence in summer 2026, with a phased completion targeted for 2030.
The signing of this memorandum not only represents a significant advancement for clean energy in British Columbia but also highlights the collaborative effort between government and Indigenous leaders to foster sustainable development while addressing the looming energy demands of the region. As the world shifts toward greener energy solutions, this initiative positions British Columbia at the forefront of the LNG industry, ready to meet both local and global energy needs.
