Major Train Derailment Halts Service in Labrador West for Up to 10 Days
URGENT UPDATE: A train derailment on Sunday is causing significant service disruptions in Labrador West, with operations expected to be suspended for 7 to 10 days. The Iron Ore Company of Canada announced via social media that the derailment occurred on the main line of the Quebec North Shore and Labrador railway, halting all rail traffic as repairs are initiated.
The company confirmed that “no one was injured” in the incident, but emphasized the urgency of repairs due to challenging weather conditions. “Rail traffic is currently suspended for an estimated period of seven to ten days to allow the necessary repairs to be carried out,” the statement read. The exact cause of the derailment and the extent of the damage remain unclear.
Passenger services operated by Tshiuetin Transportation Inc. are also affected, with the company announcing complete cancellations of train runs until further notice. In a letter dated December 29, General Manager and COO James Berube described the situation as an “exceptional” challenge for the community. “As a result, passenger train service is cancelled until further notice. No resumption of service is expected before the end of this minimum period,” Berube stated in the letter.
Tshiuetin Railway is actively engaging with three shareholder communities, including the Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam, the Innu Nation of Matimekush Lac-John, and the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach, to address the needs of individuals who rely on this vital service. Berube acknowledged the substantial impact of this disruption, particularly during the holiday season, and assured that the railway is committed to supporting affected residents.
As the situation develops, authorities are working diligently to restore service as soon as possible. For those in the region, it’s essential to stay updated on progress through local news sources and official announcements. The Quebec North Shore and Labrador railway is a critical transportation link connecting Labrador City with Quebec, making the impact of this derailment particularly significant.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as repairs continue and more information becomes available.
