UPDATE: Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a violent abduction in Manitoba, bringing a swift end to a tense 24-hour search. Joshua Paupanekis, 39, was taken into custody at approximately 11:15 a.m. on July 14, 2023, after police located the 20-year-old woman he allegedly abducted at knifepoint.

The Manitoba and Saskatchewan RCMP launched an extensive manhunt, deploying multiple units and a specialized search plane to the Pimicikamak Cree Nation, situated around 500 km north of Winnipeg. Officers first responded to an emergency call at a residence in the community at around 5:40 a.m. on July 13, where they discovered the suspect had struck a resident with a hammer before the abduction occurred.

The woman was found safe but sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. The RCMP confirmed that the incident was classified as intimate partner violence, and it remains unclear how far the suspect and victim traveled during the ordeal.

Authorities issued a dangerous person alert, urging the public not to approach Paupanekis if spotted. Fortunately, tips from the community led law enforcement to a residence in the same area, where they successfully apprehended the suspect and secured the victim.

In a statement, the Manitoba RCMP expressed gratitude to the public and media for their assistance during this critical situation. This swift resolution highlights the importance of community cooperation in ensuring safety.

As investigations continue, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The RCMP will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
