Man Arrested After Wild Boom Lift Joyride in Tsawwassen
UPDATE: A man has been arrested following a wild joyride in a boom lift that caused chaos on the streets of Tsawwassen late Sunday night, September 7, 2023. At 11:57 p.m., Delta police received urgent calls reporting a heavy boom lift being driven erratically, hitting street signs and damaging property.
Witnesses described a scene of confusion as the suspect drove the boom lift through the Southlands neighbourhood, even stopping to ask local residents for directions to the nearest liquor store. After abandoning the vehicle, he fled into a nearby cornfield, prompting a rapid police response.
Authorities swiftly set up a containment area, utilizing the Lower Mainland District Police Dog Service and a drone team to locate the suspect. This coordinated effort led to his arrest without any injuries to the public.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, faces serious charges including breaking and entering, theft over $5,000, and mischief. Following his arrest, he was released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.
Delta Police confirmed that the boom lift was successfully returned to the construction site.
“Thanks to the quick thinking of community members who called this in, and the swift response of our frontline officers, this dangerous situation was brought to a safe conclusion,” stated Delta Police media relations officer Staff Sgt. Mike Whiteley in a press release.
This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and police responsiveness in ensuring public safety. As investigations continue, local authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
