Man Sentenced to 15 Days for Assaulting Pregnant Ex-Partner

URGENT UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for assaulting his 38-week pregnant ex-partner. The ruling came down on Monday, October 23, 2023, in Brandon provincial court, highlighting the serious implications of domestic violence during pregnancy.
Scott Crawford, 34, pleaded guilty to a single count of assault, admitting to the crime that occurred on June 11. This case has drawn attention to the alarming reality of domestic violence, particularly involving vulnerable individuals.
Crown attorney Nikki Boggs detailed the events leading to the guilty plea, stating that the victim was leaving her home with her two-year-old child and a diaper bag when Crawford began yelling at her. According to police reports, Crawford obstructed her path, forcibly took the diaper bag from her shoulder, and attempted to grab her hair. He also seized her house keys and cell phone before fleeing the scene.
In a dramatic turn of events, a passerby assisted the woman in reaching the police station after she was left without her belongings. Authorities swiftly located and arrested Crawford for assault shortly thereafter.
During the court proceedings, Judge Patrick Sullivan emphasized the heightened severity of the assault due to the victim’s pregnancy. He stated, “It is the presence of the child in her arms and the pregnancy that elevate the seriousness of this domestic violence.” This statement underscores the potential long-term impacts of such violence on children.
The prosecution initially sought a 30-day sentence followed by two years of supervised probation, pointing to the need for a strong message regarding domestic violence. However, Crawford’s defense attorney argued for a lesser sentence, citing that the assault was minor and unplanned. He suggested that Crawford had shown remorse and expressed apologies for his actions.
In his ruling, Judge Sullivan acknowledged Crawford’s time in custody—75 days—prior to sentencing, stating it had already sent a message. Ultimately, he imposed a 15-day jail term followed by two years of supervised probation. The terms include a prohibition on contacting the victim unless Crawford is sober and has her consent.
This case serves as a critical reminder of the effects of domestic violence and its implications for families. As communities continue to grapple with these issues, officials stress the importance of addressing such behavior before it escalates.
Readers are urged to stay informed on developments in domestic violence legislation and support services as these stories unfold. The impact of incidents like this reverberates through families and communities, making awareness and action essential.
As this story continues to develop, the public is encouraged to share and discuss to raise awareness about domestic violence and its consequences.
