UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to 15 days in jail for assaulting his 38-week pregnant ex-partner, a decision made in Brandon provincial court on Monday. This urgent ruling underlines the serious nature of domestic violence, especially involving vulnerable individuals.

Scott Crawford, 34, pleaded guilty to assault after a disturbing incident on June 11, 2023, where he confronted his ex-partner as she attempted to leave her home with their toddler and a diaper bag. According to Crown attorney Nikki Boggs, Crawford’s aggressive behavior escalated quickly, culminating in him physically obstructing her path and forcibly taking her belongings.

Judge Patrick Sullivan emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting, “The presence of the child in her arms and the pregnancy elevate the seriousness of this domestic violence.” This statement highlights how domestic abuse impacts not only the immediate victims but also children who witness such incidents.

The victim reported the assault to the Brandon Police Service immediately after the confrontation. In her statement, she described how Crawford yelled at her and tried to grab her hair as she attempted to walk away, ultimately taking her house keys and cellphone before fleeing. Stranded and without means to contact authorities, a passerby transported her to the police station.

Despite the victim’s reluctance to pursue charges, the Crown decided to proceed with the case, resulting in Crawford’s guilty plea. During sentencing, Boggs requested a 30-day sentence followed by two years of supervised probation, citing the need to hold Crawford accountable for his actions.

Crawford’s defense attorney, Philip Sieklicki, argued for a lesser sentence, claiming that the incident was minor and unplanned. He also noted that Crawford has no prior assault convictions, attributing his recent behavior to a downward spiral following the death of his grandfather in 2020.

In a poignant moment, Judge Sullivan warned Crawford about the long-term effects of domestic violence on children, stating that they model behavior from their parents. He noted the importance of setting a positive example for future generations.

Ultimately, the court sentenced Crawford to 15 days in custody, along with two years of supervised probation. Conditions of his probation include only contacting the victim while sober and with her consent.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issue of domestic violence and its impacts on families. The short sentence reflects a push for accountability, while also acknowledging the complexities surrounding such incidents.

As this case continues to resonate within the community, it is imperative to advocate for awareness and support for victims of domestic violence. The emotional ramifications extend far beyond the courtroom, affecting not only those directly involved but also the wider community.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities continue to address domestic violence in Brandon and beyond.
